1

Heating

Warm air is distributed through vents around the living area.

2

Hot Water

Many Truma Combi systems also heat domestic water.

3

Energy Source

Some units run on gas, electric hook-up or mixed mode.

4

Fault Codes

Modern controls show warnings when something needs attention.

Using your system

Truma heating controls explained

The exact control panel depends on the age and specification of the vehicle, but most Truma systems work around the same core settings: room heating, hot water, fan level and energy source.

Heating

Room Heating Mode

Room heating uses warm air blown through outlets around the habitation area.

  • Open vents before use
  • Do not block outlets with bags or bedding
  • Allow time for the vehicle to warm evenly
Hot water

Water Heating Mode

The boiler must be filled with water before heating water. Running without water can cause issues or shut-down warnings.

  • Check the fresh water tank
  • Check the pump is switched on
  • Check the FrostControl valve has not opened

Fault codes

Common Truma fault codes and what they mean

Truma fault codes vary by model, control panel and year. Always check your vehicle handbook, Truma manual or the official Truma error catalogue first. The examples below cover common warning themes owners often see.

W407H

Electric Supply Warning

Often appears when an electric heating mode is selected but the system cannot see a suitable mains supply.

  • Check the vehicle is connected to electric hook-up
  • Check the mains RCD and breakers
  • Check the control panel is not set to electric-only by mistake
  • Try gas mode if safe and appropriate

If mains power is present but the warning remains, professional testing may be needed.

Low voltage

Battery Voltage Warning

A weak leisure battery can stop a Truma heater from starting or cause it to shut down during operation.

  • Charge the leisure battery fully
  • Check battery condition if it drops quickly
  • Avoid running heavy 12v loads at the same time
  • Consider battery testing if the issue repeats
Gas

Ignition or Gas Supply Fault

If the heater fails to ignite, the system may display a warning or shut itself down.

  • Check the gas bottle is not empty
  • Check the bottle valve and isolation valve are open
  • Check other gas appliances are working
  • After a bottle change, air may need clearing from the gas line

Do not dismantle gas components yourself.

Water

Hot Water Fault

The heater may run for room heat but fail to produce hot water if the boiler is empty, drained or incorrectly set.

  • Check water is reaching the taps
  • Check the boiler has filled
  • Check the drain valve is closed
  • Check hot water mode is selected correctly
Unknown code

Code Not Listed

Some codes relate to specific models or production years and should be checked against the correct manual.

  • Note the exact code including letters
  • Take a photo of the display
  • Record when it appears and what mode was selected
  • Contact the workshop with the details
Useful tip: Before calling, take a clear photo of the Truma display showing the full code, such as W255H or W407H. Also note whether you were using gas, electric or mixed mode, and whether the fault appeared during heating, hot water or start-up.

Troubleshooting

Common Truma heating faults and simple checks

These checks are aimed at owners and do not involve dismantling the appliance. If you are unsure, or if the fault involves gas, electrics or repeated warnings, arrange a workshop inspection.

Cold air

Fan Runs but Air Is Cold

If the fan operates but no heat is produced, the burner may not have lit or the energy source may not be available.

  • Look for a warning message
  • Try gas mode if electric mode is not available
  • Check the gas bottle and isolation valve
  • Allow the unit a few minutes to start producing heat
Hot water

No Hot Water

The boiler may not be full, the wrong mode may be selected, or the FrostControl valve may have opened and drained the water.

  • Run a hot tap and check water flow
  • Check pump and fresh water level
  • Check the drain valve below the boiler
  • Select hot water mode and allow time to heat
Resetting

Fault Returns After Reset

A reset may clear a temporary warning, but if the same fault keeps returning, the cause has probably not been fixed.

  • Do not keep repeatedly forcing restarts
  • Make a note of the exact code
  • Check power, gas and water basics
  • Book diagnosis if the fault repeats
FrostControl

Boiler Keeps Draining

The FrostControl valve is designed to help protect the boiler from frost damage and may open in low temperatures.

  • Warm the area around the valve
  • Close the drain valve once conditions allow
  • Refill the boiler before heating water
  • Check for leaks after refilling
Smell or noise

Unusual Smell, Noise or Behaviour

Any unusual smell, repeated clicking, loud fan noise or strange behaviour should be treated seriously.

  • Switch the heater off
  • Ventilate the vehicle if you smell gas
  • Do not remove covers or attempt gas repairs
  • Arrange professional inspection

Owner care

Truma heating maintenance advice

Regular owner checks can help prevent avoidable faults and make the system easier to diagnose if something does go wrong.

Airflow

Keep Vents Clear

Blocked warm-air outlets can reduce performance and make the system work harder than it needs to.

  • Do not block vents with bags or bedding
  • Vacuum dust around outlets
  • Check ducts have not been crushed by stored items
Battery

Look After the Leisure Battery

Even gas heating systems need 12v power for controls, ignition and fans.

  • Keep the battery charged
  • Check voltage before off-grid trips
  • Consider testing older batteries
  • Investigate repeated low-voltage warnings
Winter

Winter Drain-Down

If the vehicle is being stored in cold weather, drain the water system correctly to help protect the boiler and pipework.

  • Drain fresh water and boiler where required
  • Leave taps open as advised in your handbook
  • Understand how the FrostControl valve works
  • Refill carefully before using hot water again
Gas

Gas System Checks

Gas supply issues are a common reason for failed ignition and heating faults.

  • Check gas level before travel
  • Make sure the correct regulator and bottle setup is used
  • Have gas safety checks carried out as required
  • Do not attempt gas appliance repairs yourself
Records

Keep a Fault Record

A simple record helps the workshop diagnose intermittent issues more quickly.

  • Take photos of fault codes
  • Note gas, electric or mixed mode
  • Note outside temperature if relevant
  • Record whether heating, water or both were selected

When to contact our workshop

1Repeated Fault CodesIf the same warning returns after resetting, there may be an underlying fault that needs checking.
2No Heat or Hot WaterIf basic owner checks do not restore operation, the system may need diagnosis.
3Gas or Electrical ConcernIf you smell gas, suspect a supply issue or have repeated electrical warnings, switch the system off and seek advice.
4Workshop InspectionWe can inspect the system at our Paignton service centre and advise on the best next step.

Truma heating FAQs

Common questions about Truma heating systems in motorhomes, campervans and caravans.

Why is my Truma heating not working?
Common causes include no gas supply, no electric hook-up when electric mode is selected, low leisure battery voltage, incorrect control settings, blocked vents or a fault within the heater.
What does W255H mean on a Truma control panel?
W255H is commonly linked to the control panel not communicating with the heater. This may be caused by a 12v power supply issue, a fuse problem or a communication cable issue. If basic power checks do not resolve it, the system should be inspected.
What does W407H mean on Truma heating?
W407H is commonly associated with the system not seeing a suitable mains supply while an electric mode is selected. Check your hook-up, RCD, breakers and energy source setting. If mains power is present and the warning remains, seek professional advice.
Why is my Truma heater blowing cold air?
If the fan runs but the air remains cold, the heater may not be igniting, the selected energy source may not be available, the gas supply may be off, or the system may have logged a fault.
Why is my Truma hot water not working?
Check that the boiler is full, the correct hot water mode is selected, the gas or electric supply is available and the FrostControl valve has not opened and drained the boiler.
What does the Truma FrostControl valve do?
The FrostControl valve helps protect the boiler from frost damage by draining water in cold conditions. If it has opened, the boiler will need to be refilled before hot water will work again.
Can I reset my Truma heating system?
Some temporary warnings can clear after the cause is corrected and the system is reset, but the reset method depends on the model and control panel. If the same warning returns, do not keep forcing restarts; arrange diagnosis.
Should Truma heating be serviced?
Heating systems should be kept in safe working order and checked if they show repeated faults, poor performance, unusual noises, ignition problems, gas smells or hot water issues.
